We are all breathing a sigh of relief from being spared from Hurricane Dorian hitting the Tampa Bay area. We are outside of the cone of uncertainty issued by the National Hurricane Center. It hit the Bahamas as a powerful Cat 5 Hurricane and it is still undetermined which direction along the Atlantic Ocean of where it will make land. The name Dorian was on most people’s minds and overheard in conversations all around for days.
Hurricane Dorian
At the time of this writing, Hurricane Dorian is an active and powerful tropical cyclone threatening the Southeastern United States focusing on Florida and South Carolina. It is the fourth named storm, second hurricane, and the first major hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. Dorian originally developed from a tropical wave in the Central Atlantic.
Inspection
Thankfully Tampa Bay was spared the wrath of Hurricane Dorian this time. We may not be so lucky next time. That is why we highly recommend that you have your property inspected for any possible dangers of dying or damaged trees or potentially precariously placed trees that could hit your roof, home, car or other items during a wind storm.

We have extensive experience with Hurricanes in Florida since we have been in operation here in Palm Harbor since 2007.
During hurricanes, tropical storms and even Florida’s famous severe summer thunderstorms, trees come down around Tampa Bay. They fall on cars, homes, and the damage can cause massive amounts of damage.
Taking care of it now before the next threat of disaster comes about is adviseable. Trees break at fixed wind speeds, irrespective of size or species. During storms, there is a critical wind speed, of around 90 mph, at which most tree trunks break regardless of their size or species.
A strong, deep-rooted tree may not be the problem during the storm. It can be the weak limbs in the canopy that fall or turn into projectile weapons that can cause significant damage. These broken, dead, and damaged limbs can be torn from the trees during a storm and turned into dangerous projectiles.
Professional tree experts can prune trees over the course of the tree’s life that create a sturdy, well-spaced framework of healthy branches with an open canopy that allows wind to flow freely through.
Trees to Watch Out For
Here are the trees you need to watch out for before a hurricane or strong storm:
- Trees with dense canopies
- Dead or dying trees
- Trees with codominant trunks
- New plantings and young trees
Consult with a certified arborist to see if these, or any other tree hazards, exist around your home.
